“Please be a traveller, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.”
― Andrew Zimmern
This blog post is about local traditional festivals in Corfu and is inspired by the "Panzer family", who are frequent visitors and show great interest in them.
We started by gathering for them all the traditional festivals that are taking place during June! But we did not stop there!
Dear Traveler,
Welcome to our Corfiot world! We believe participating in a local festival is a fantastic way to experience Corfiot traditions (some of them) authentically.
Our post is concise yet informative. You will find the dates and locations of local festivals for each summer month. By tapping on the location names, you can easily get directions through Google Maps.
Many traditional festivals are taking place all over Greece and in Corfu every summer.
Typically, the primary festivities occur at the village square or churchyard, specifically on the day of that church's celebration. Usually, a liturgy takes place in the morning.
We have compiled a list that includes most of the traditional festivals in Corfu, along with directions to each location (via Google Maps). Although the directions to each location may be less than 100% accurate, they will bring you as close to the festival as possible. Once you arrive, park your car or Vespa scooter in a safe spot and follow the music if you still need to find the festival.
Any time after 🕘 20:30 is an excellent time to participate in the festival.
At these festivals, expect to enjoy live Corfiot music, traditional dancing by locals, and delicious food like grilled souvlakia, spit-roasted lamb, Greek salad and Feta cheese (available in some of them), grilled corn on the cob, cotton candy, loukoumades (greek version of a doughnut, usually the dough recipe it is vegan friendly). You might even find halva Farsalon, a Greek halvah jelly that usually contains roasted almonds.
To get directions via Google Maps, tap on the location name. Or, use the interactive map we have created. You can open the interactive map on a new tab and navigate or remain on the site. If you're unfamiliar with using Google My Maps, we've attached instructions on how to use the map for your convenience!
